The theme poses a timeless question, one people of all kinds try to figure out or grapple; is our world real or not? Well, seeing as though the movie cuts out before we see what happens to the top, it's up to debate as to whether or not he's still dreaming, thus making us ask that question.
My opinion on it is that, at least plot-wise, it doesn't matter whether or not the world is real, but rather that we have enough doubt to ask the question in the first place.

very good thought raven, but on a more literal basis based off the flow of the film id have to say that its my belief that at the end he is back in reality, the waking world.

One is that the top slows down before it cuts off, making you think it is indeed reality.
On another note, they cut off from when he awakes on the plane, onto where he comes back home to his children.... starting in the middle of the dream in which he is still in the dream world. This is what my dad thinks is right...
My own personal belief is that he is back in reality, but of course the movie won't ever let you be too sure of that one... They want you to think about it.

Oh.
I read this on Wikipedia, so I'm not sure if it's correct, but apparently after the end credits, a small noise is heard, perhaps indicating that the top indeed fell over.
